PRL Will Always Be Home To Me Now

Welcome Home! I have stayed in Provincetown many times over the years and never at the same place twice.  I remember passing by the Poor Richard's Landing (PRL) sign years ago, seeing a flowery sea view that beckoned.  I only remembered this forgotten memory when I stayed for the first time for most of September and October in this tumultuous year of 2020. PRL connected me back to life this year and brought joy and peace. PRL is about the people - Sarah Grey and Diane who manage the place - and the guests - new and returning who relish the specialness of the cottages, the garden and the sea and their fellow travelers.  PRL will always be home to me now.

Poor Richards Landing is Olde Cape

For years, people have asked me why I go to Poor Richard’s Landing in Provincetown, when I own a home in Harwichport on Cape Cod. My answer? Simple. Poor Richards Landing is Olde Cape and unique to the Cape. When I am there, I am off the grid as much as I want to be. As an artist, I love sitting on their dock and painting or sketching or just imagining my next work. Deeply relaxing. Diane and Sarah are perfect hosts, very capable and helpful when you want it but never bothersome. They feel like family to me. They know the town intimately and can queue you into the best place for this or that, and equally important, what to avoid. So I go back every year, because it is idyllic no matter where you come from, even if that’s another place on the Cape.

A Quiet Ease and Communal Atmosphere

It’s hard to explain the comfort and beauty of Poor Richard’s Landing, but I’ll try. PRL is a silvery driftwood collection of structures opening out onto the ocean, on the bay side of Provincetown, MA. There is a merry green garden running all through it which is dotted with vegetables and flowers.

Sarah and Diane who run it have created a quiet ease and communal atmosphere that you feel as soon as you arrive. There are bikes and boats and floating tubes for anyone to use and a grill at the ready for when you want to toast a marshmallow or grill a hot dog. I always feel that I have been dropped off at my favorite summer camp, or maybe at 28 Barbary Lane. Many of my most delicious naps have occurred at PRL. It’s where I go in my head whenever I need to calm down.

A Classic Ptown Refuge

“When I slip through the painted saloon doors of PRL, I am struck by the warmth of the merry band of residents whom I have come to know and cherish over the years. Their embrace, curiosity, and acceptance inspire me. The wharf cottages are masterfully run by Sarah and Diane, who have welcomed me ‘home’ for many years, with a cocktail, fresh garden produce and a hug. I have my favorite cottage, with its view of the arc of the bay and the aura from an earlier era. I spend much of my time in the clear cool water, just steps from the door, simply reading on the deck, or enjoying long conversations on a warm afternoon. The fun and shenanigans of town are a short walk away. You will not regret a visit to this classic Ptown refuge. It’s sublime.”

So Much More Than A Vacation Spot

“I have been staying at the Landing for many years now, and it’s so much more than a vacation spot. Whether it’s for a few days or several weeks, Sarah and Di create a fun and welcoming community atmosphere that make it The Most special place in all of P-town. The cottages are clean and have everything you need, and you can step right out to the quiet Bay beach for a swim or a walk to the pier. I always feel right at home at the Landing, and feel the community is my summer family.”
